DAMAGES MUST BE PAID FOR

Hudson inched forward and peeked around the side of the hexagonal archway that lead inside the Revocater’s core room. It appeared empty, but Hudson had learned never to trust appearances at face value, especially when star scavengers were involved. While skill was the ultimate determining factor when it came to securing a good score, the easiest way to get rich was to simply ambush another hunter and steal their bounty.

“It looks clear,” Hudson whispered to his partner, while checking the scan readings on his watch. “And I’m not picking up any heat signatures or signs of respiration inside the room, either. But you should check, too. This older watch is less sensitive than the one I sold on New Phobos.”

Tory nodded then checked the readings from her own scanner, being careful not to rush. They had time to spare, on account of the fact that the Creed Brothers had already helpfully set out a number of bridges, rope ladders and anchor points for ropes, all of which Hudson and Tory had employed gainfully. As a result, it had taken them less than an hour to reach the core room, where the brains of the Revocaters – along with their crystal chambers – were located.

“It’s clear; we can move in,” Tory said, revolver in hand. “I’m detecting some minute vibrations through the deck and walls, though. It could be others approaching.”

Hudson nodded then moved through, still choosing to aim his PKD energy pistol into the dark corners, despite Tory’s assurances that no-one was inside.

“I’d guess we have twenty minutes at most before Griff and Ash reach this room, assuming they entered through the established access point at the nose of the ship.”

“That’s a shame, because this Revocater is a goldmine.” Tory was stalking around the room, prising open panels and pocketing the low-hanging fruit. “I bet we could easily bag a seven-figure score, just from this room.”

Hudson laughed. “We’re only here for the crystal shard, assuming there is one.” He spotted the crystal chamber in the center of the room and knelt down in front of it. His watch immediately registered a powerful Shaak signature. “And from these readings, it certainly looks like there’s something in here.”

“Then get to work, while I bag some other relics to cover our expenses,” Tory said, still searching behind open panels for the easiest-to-reach and most valuable alien tech.

Hudson removed his pack and set out the tools he’d need to crack open the crystal chamber. Over the years, hunter-engineers had developed specialist equipment that had been honed for the sole purpose of getting inside the hard-to-reach parts of an alien Revocater. Re-forged from alien alloys, they were the most expensive items in a star scavenger’s inventory, bar fuel and the hunter ships themselves. Only the top scavengers could afford such equipment, without which it was almost impossible to bag a high-value score. This gave the elite hunters an almost unassailable advantage that kept them above newcomers and aspiring scavengers. The only
